Virechanam can be categorized into two ways-

Characteristics

  1. Rooksha (dry) eg: purgation, laxation with medicinal powders + Warm water
  2. Snigdha (uncteous) eg: purgation, laxation with medicated caster oil

 
Functional

  1. Mriduvirechana (laxation) eg: Laxation with Triphala choornam + warm water
  2. Theekshna virechana (purgation) eg: Purgation with abhayadi modakam, Avipathi choornam etc

Indications

  1. Chronic constipation, Arshas
  2. Pakshgatham, Skin diseases
  3. Diseases of genito – urinary tract
  4. Intoxication, Complications of amam
  5. Manasika rogas
  6. Pithaja disorders etc, G.I.T Disturbances
  7. Liver and pancreatic dysfunctions and anomalies
  8. Jaundice [kamala]

Contra Indications

  1. Rakthaathisaram
  2. Athisaram, Grahani, Pravahika
  3. Bleeding piles, Abscess
  4. Calcinoma or adenoma re in colon
  5. Inflammatory conditions of pancreas
  6. Acute infections
  7. Bedridden cases, Ama conditions
